Most San Diego contractors claim thirty or forty years by adding up the experience of everyone on the payroll. At UltraScape, those forty years belong to one owner, on one company, since 1984 — and that owner still runs every project, backed by the same in-house crew.
Darren Earl founded UltraScape Construction in 1984. Four decades later, the company still works the way it did on the first job: the owner designs and prices the build, and is on-site with his crew while it goes in. The Better Business Bureau opened our file in 1994 — thirty years of documented history, an A+ rating, and no major consumer disputes on record.
One homeowner came to me after three failed revisions on a layout she’d driven herself. Her biggest patio held her smallest element — a firepit — while the barbecue and dining were crammed into the tightest corner of the yard. When she finally handed me the design, I started over from how she actually lived outside: where people gather, where they eat, where they pass through. We redesigned around that, talked through what each material would and wouldn’t do for the money, and came in $30,000 under her previous quote — with room left to add a $15,000 outdoor kitchen on the same budget. Same dollars, a yard that finally worked.

Every project runs in the same order. First we figure out how the yard has to work — how your family actually lives outside, where people walk, which rooms get used and which sit empty, and how big each zone really needs to be. Then we build the structure that makes it last: concrete, steel, masonry, and engineered retaining walls. Aesthetics come last, not first.
Most failed projects aren’t built wrong. They’re laid out wrong — the biggest space handed to the thing you use least, the dining squeezed into a corner, money spent where it doesn’t change how you live. Get the layout and the structure right, and the materials and finishes do what they’re supposed to.
